Conference report

Farid Yanes, a research fellow at the Institut National de Télécommunications, gave a presentation on LEVERAGE at the ATM Development ’97 conference in Rennes (25-27 March 1997). We persuaded him to provide a snapshot of the event for LEVERAGE News.

The European ATM community gets together each spring in Rennes, France, for a three-day conference and exhibition entitled ATM Development.

This year the exhibition featured: over 30 leading ATM networking vendors who demonstrated their products including switches, ATM analysers, and ATM protocol testers; ATM users, such as the Regional Council of Brittany, who presented the IMMEDIAT, EIS and PRISME projects; and telecommunications companies such as France Telecom.

Among ATM equipment vendors, 3Com showed its multimedia platform based on CELLplex ATM switches. General DataComm demonstrated the interoperability of their Multimedia Multipoint Server with the video services offered in their ATM APEX product line. Newbridge presented its MainStreetXpress equipment and its Entr@networking solutions.

The Regional Council of Brittany presented and demonstrated some of the ‘Information Superhighway’ experiments being conducted locally such as the remote medical project IMMEDIAT and the PRISME project which offers businesses a regional experimentation platform for interactive multimedia services.

France Telecom demonstrated its work on the capacity of ATM to process information in real-time and to adapt a variety of user needs such as quality-controlled Web service, an ATM connection with a flexible pass band using ABT-IT, the ABT-DT protocol, and the Batru project.

The conference programme included ACTS workshops, ATM Forum workshops, and an international virtual round table. The objective of the ACTS workshops was to get feedback concerning the feasibility and impact of guidelines for broadband networks developed by the different European R&D projects participating in the ACTS programme. The European Market Awareness Committee (EMAC) presented developments in ATM Forum specifications. During the round table an international virtual meeting was set up between users of some of the major ATM networks and platforms.

The conference sessions focused on four major issues: standards and state of the art; new functionalities, concepts and products; applications; and implementing ATM. All conferences were designed to address current technical and business issues for ATM. The first session was mainly dedicated to IP and ATM (Cisco); voice and telephony in the field of the multiservice over ATM (Madge Networks) and video over ATM (IBM). Dassault Electronique presented the challenges offered by IPv6 over ATM while ENST Bretagne presented TCP over ATM without IP.

During the application sessions I presented the LEVERAGE project focusing in particular on the videoconferencing and network aspects of our work. Other projects including OASICE in Colmar, which uses ATM technology for developing teleservices like teleteaching and video on demand, were also presented.
