LEVERAGE: a brief reminder
The partners in the three-year LEVERAGE project (1996-1998) are exploring how the capabilities of broadband networks can be married with innovative task-based pedagogy to provide solutions to the rapidly expanding need for enhanced linguistic and cross-cultural skills which enable people to co-operate in an increasingly international environment.

LEVERAGE: major milestones since autumn 1997
The first transnational user trial of the LEVERAGE system took place between Cambridge and Evry (near Paris) using the ATM services of the ACTS project JAMES.

Students on both sites made good use of the system during the six-week trial. They were particularly enthusiastic about the high quality of the videoconferencing used in conjunction with various Web-based and asynchronous communication tools. This was particularly gratifying for the members of the LEVERAGE team who have been concentrating on improving the quality of multipoint videoconferencing. For a full report on the trials see Katherine's article in the Pedagogical issues section.

Since the last issue of LEVERAGE News we have also held our first international conference Education in the communication age and made a video presenting the work of the LEVERAGE project. Philippa gives an account of the conference in the Conference report section.

LEVERAGE: next steps
The activities of the JAMES project were halted in March 1998, so now LEVERAGE is facing a new challenge: carrying out our 3rd user trial between all three sites (Cambridge, Paris , Madrid) with intersite connections using low cost alternatives to JAMES. Therefore much is at stake with the third user trial, however, our engineers are currently investigating all the available options and are confident that the trials will take place as planned at the end of 1998.

We look forward to being able to share the results of these user trials with you at our second LEVERAGE conference which will take place in Madrid in December 1998. On behalf of the LEVERAGE team I invite you to join us there.

Copies of the LEVERAGE video and further details about the conference are available from the LEVERAGE Information Unit at CILT. E-mail: leverage@cilt.org.uk.
