[Ribagorda:1997]
Kerckhoffs' Law also known
as Kerckhoffs' principle, assumption, or axiom, states that a cryptosystem or
cryptographic algorithm must be secure even if all its inner workings, and
everything about it (saving only the key) is known.
Originally stated (by
Auguste Kerckhoffs in the 19th century) that a system "must not be
required to be secret, and it must be able to fall into the hands of the enemy
without inconvenience."
